Govind Srinivasan
Hello WCFCians,

Mr. P.K. Srinivasan was a well-known Chennai citizen, who lived for the cause of Maths Education. PKS, as he was known to world at large, pioneered the cause of Maths Clubs in Chennai Schools and took that initiative throughout Tamilnadu, the U.S. and Nigeria, where he worked at different times in his life. He represented the country in International Maths Education Meets held in different countries. He popularized Recreational Mathematics and was instrumental in making children shed off Maths-phobia.

PKS made life-time contributions of an extraordinary nature to popularize the life and works of Mathematician Ramanujan and created the first-ever Museum for Ramanujan in Chennai. He wrote more than 40 enrichment books for children and teachers and was a popular Maths columnist in THE HINDU and other newspapers.

PKS remained a humble School Mathematics Teacher and lived in Chennai for most part of his life, even though he visited many countries and was offered many opportunities there. He was a strong patriot, who said "Extraordinary Maths talent in Indian children is as precious a resource like Uranium deposits".

He found immense joy in building MAGIC SQUARES, commemorating different occasions and making people see the magic properties of numbers and encouraging them build them.

India had seen a very few teachers of his eminence, dedication and devotion of extreme order. His life and works are his greatest contributions to Chennai and India.

PKS passed way on 20th June, 2005, after living in this world for 80 years.

***********************************************************
Mr. N. RAVI, Editor, THE HINDU and the family of PKS are joining hands and conducting a "HOMAGE TO PKS" meeting. Here are the details:

14TH AUGUST, 2005
10 AM TO 12 NOON

BHARATIYA VIDYA BHAVAN
EAST MADA STREET, MYLAPORE, CHENNAI 60004

***********************************************************

PKS was a man extraordinaire. As a Chennaiite and as his son, who had the fortune of interacting with him many times at an intellectual plane and overawed by his power of thought and expression, I invite you, with folded hands, to attend the "HOMAGE TO PKS" Programme.

I don't know many of you personally. I still take the liberty of inviting you, as I think that this is the way how we can honour a Chennaiite, who was so found of Chennai and who added meaning to life throughout his life.

Thats so nice of you, Sushi, to have given a clarion call to the rest of the WCFCians.

That I happened to be the son of PKS is incidental and he was more connected to the society, maths education, nurturing creativity in children, nationalistic outlook, etc., than to the family. I truly believe that he was one of the tallest citizens of Chennai in every respect, by accomplishments and public-spirited attitude.

I am eager to see you and every other WCFCian tomorrow at BHARATIYA VIDYA BHAVAN, Mylapore at 10 AM.

Hello WCFCians,

Well, the "HOMAGE TO PKS - THE LEGENDARY MATHS EDUCATOR" Meeting went on really well at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on Sunday, the 14th Aug.

Well, I couldn't any see any WCFCian in the meeting. The meeting was well attended. After all, Mathematics or Mathematics Education is not something that can enthuse people from different walks of life. I understand. Nevertheless, I also feel that India requires a lot of committed and zealous intellectuals, pursuing their professional specializations, who could make their contributions touch our lives and change them, one way or other. PKS was one such out of one-in-million personalities.

Here is the press clipping link, about the meeting, that you may like to read.

People we care for are immortal in our minds.

I've met Mr PKS a few times back in 1997. My father in law Mr N Balasubramanian and he were room-mates for a while during that time at the Ramanujam Museum (I hope I got that right.). And they were very good friends. He gifted me with some lovely books for my wedding in Feburary 1997.

May his soul rest in peace.

Regards,

Vidya Sury
