Name a eating place in\around chennai, type of food they serve, what you like about the place.

The meal costs around Rs. 60/- to 80/- depending on your selection but you feel you are eating a safe food.
Ofcourse, the rush is little too much and the serving takes more time than necessary which can be corrected.

This is my current Fav -
Moonrakers - its off Mahabalipuram (# 34, Othavadai St, Mahabs, 603104).
The place is quaint little fishing hotel. Fishermen drop off their catch at the hotel. Customers chose their catch and get them cooked.
Its got mirrors, innumerable artefacts adorning the walls, old B\w pictures of India, its freedom fighters, etc.
They even cater to inhouse massages...
Their speciality -
Tiger Prawns
Shrimp sauted in Garlic butter sauce.
Catch of the Day - Be sure to ask the details and the price as this is seasonal.
The food is out of this world. A sunday drive to this place is all but worth it.
Wash it down with some cold beer and you are ready to start the rest of week.
Yummm!!

How could one forget the Idlies and sambar that draws many a hungry mouth to the city..
Woodlands Drive in
Murugan Idly shop are right on top for Idlies (plate of 2 idlies with 4chutneys n sambar- Rs12/-)
Tongue tinglers- a small joint run by Gujju family on Habibullah road,off Gn Chetty road is an ideal place for VEGGIE khana..amazing food at very very reasonable price..They make a yummy Spinach-corn Augratein
AS for me
I love
Moonrakers- although the choice for veggie cuisine is kinda limited..
Mr.G's in Adyar is yet another favourite- PAstas there are divine,mouth watering and absolutely amazing..PLus they give you the TV remote if u make too much noise and let you change channels..lol...a Meal for 2 would cost about Rs150- Rs200/-
All this food talk is making me Hungry....:)

It also Has in the next building Kumarakom (another eating joint-Kerala food) and Naidu Hall
A stones throw aaway from Food world Supermarket in Gandhinagar . Hope you find it out -the roads one way and you have to approach from the Pantaloon /Sangeetha end

They are on a road off Usman Road-I forget the name -but they advertise fairly regularly in the friday suplement of the Hindu (a small advt)
Great Gujarathi and Rajasthani food -of course pure veg
No fancy decor and a bit cramped on weekends but the foods worth it

Mansukh's is great and so rich. I feel so FAT after all that lovely food.
A nice place for good punjabi food is "The Punjabi Dhaba".
Its on Poonamallee high road. About 100 - 150 meters to the right of Ega theatre.
The food is dirt cheap with amazing lassi, baingan ka bartha, aloo sabzhi and rotis. Yummm!
Its on the rooftop and late night is the best time to visit. Its open till after 12 am.

1. La Madeline- French Cuisine- Poes Garden
2. Cedars- Middle East Cuisine- Kotturpuram
Lavanya please note this is not a place for vegetarians like us. I ordered for what sounded like the most exotic stuff on the menu (that was the only vege). They served me arabic bread stuffed with rice.
3. Benjarong- Thai Cuisine- T.T.K Road
4. Bela Ciao (most of you must be familiar with this one)- Italian food (amazing white wine)- Valmiki Nagar
I'll come back with more perhaps. I really miss Chennai now.

Me not only veggie, also jaini..that is no masala, no garlic etc for me. so the one i choose when I am in Chennai is Woodlands ie the main one, not the drive in.. I love the food there though hate the crowd waiting behind your back wishing mentally that you finish your food soon.Sometimes after I finish my lunch, i just order coffee to irritate them ..you should see the faces they make as if I have ordered for Rum/beer..I feel them asking in their mind 'how can you?'.. Sometimes it feels like you are in a rail compartment i.e unreserved one..Till you enter you just feel even a place to stand is enough and once you enter first you crave for a seat and then a window seat and then finally some place to lie down..
Harish..dont take too much of that punjabi daba lassi etc.Already, due to the odd hours you keep, your waistline is expanding..ie.what I was told..(hahahaha) The way you are relishing punjabi Daaba food, soon you may have to consult Anurag about gym ..This is just to remind you that nowadays girls are too choosy too..
Gokul..I have to remind you, you are just engaged not yet married. so be careful to maintain the same shape as you are now till the 'D' Day. Otherwise,your would be may not recognize you. I would advise you to skip this thread till your marriage..

I guess the best place where we would'nt be subjected to this treatment would be by the beach- jus drive down, sit in the car, order for some "Molaga Bajjis" (you'll get royal treatment). One condition though, you should just not bother to look at their "kitchen" (do we do that with good restaurants)- Just enjoy the yummy bajjis!
There is this nice outlet called "Coffee" near the Adyar Music College- it used to be calm, I'm not sure if it's become popular now. Thats a good joint for a light snack.

Hay...when is the 'D' day.. we may even have 'Fufa Mixer' in the wedding hall. See Fufa had a mixer in ship, hotel, beach etc. but Chennaites will be the first to have one in a wedding function.. Aana (coming) free, khana (food) free but while 'jana i.e going' you will carry some weight with you..
kya idea hai..I pat myself. Harish..you can plan ...oh..sorry sorry..you will also be busy na?

so iam pretty much in shape. 'Fufa Mixer' in the wedding hall is a good idea except that we got to find a new co moderator.. Harish's line and time is whole day reserved for his better half. the only time i get to talk with him is when we go down for a fume.

For punjabi food i like Tandoor & OPal Inn. The new yorker in Chennai SUCKS i went when it had just opened and we had italin which was the worst ever.
For italian food eden is superb. They have punjabi too which is pretty cool.. DONT EVER TRY BELLA CIAO...IT PROMISES AUTHENTIC ITALIAN FOOD AND ALL THEY SERVE IS BRINJALS. We had ordered 4 - 5 dishes and in everything they had brinjals including the Pizza!! :)....and the guy who runs it says its AUTHENTIC italtin food...my ass ...Authentic or not it sucked. Little Italy is good I heard but enjoy the food so much.
Little Italy opp Taj is good too.
For gujju food u can also try gujarati samaj on broadway lucnh is between 11.30 -1.30. Its good for non Gujjus as they havent had authetic gujju food. If u want the best u have to have it at someones house where they do it well.

We sales guys have been eating there for ages !! it is a small little mess run by a group of Telegu guys and the food is great.....everything home made there....rite from the mirchi to dal...we have actually tasted all the restraunts in chennai but this is only place which does not upset ur stomach the next day/evening.
It is at a small house in t.nagar in one of the lanes from burkit road !

This is unfair - a discussion about food and I havent been involved :(
After reading thro, I list out some favourite joints of mine. And you can rest assured as these are from a true gourmet and a hard-core chennai-ite.
For the class-unconscious (Strange terminology?), the roadsite eateries are the best places to have some amazing parotta - servai, and they are all around.
Podi dosa at Brilliants (that man must have made a fortune by now, and Brilliants is more famous for this than the institute itself :))
Mylai Karpagambals is a good place - one must check it out. Very close to the temple. Their sambar is awesome.
Ratnas cafe - off Alwarpet junction is another sambaresque joint!
Beijing Blues used to be good - they closed shop. Dunno if they are around now.
For the late-nighters, Dasaprakash on PH Road is a heaven - piping hot idli-sambar anytime!
If you want to do Italian, Little Italy is the latest joint to hit the town - though I must say I wasnt impressed with their customer service. (A tad expensive, maybe)
For Punjabi - Try the dhaba on Cenotaph Road.
If you want to try Chinese and strictly Chin Veg Hoon (thats chinese for Main Chinese Vegetarian hoon :)) - try this place called 'heaven and earth' or whatever on Mount Road - dont quote me on this, I havent been there yet.

Vishranti, the low ceiling, dimly lit restaurant on the same road is also a decent place.
Mathura in the Tarapore Towers on Mount Road used to be a nice family joint - I don’t know how it is these days though.
I have always liked Geeta Cafe in Pondy Bazaar for a light snack, after some good shopping- the ambience may not be very impressive though. Murugan Idly shop is another small joint on G.N. Chetty Rd(I think)- one should ask for "Chakkara Pongal" in the mornings there- it just melts in your mouth!

Another new addition.
Kumarakom on Arcot Road has opened a new branch. It has replaced 'Rice & Spice'. It is barely 100 meteres from the Nungambakkam road. I did visit the new resturant on Saturday and what a pleasant surprise.
The food just melts in your mouth as they had a some lovely malayalam songs sung live by one of the talented waiters. It was listening some melodious karoke along with delectable delights.
