Like any other city, Chennai too has its own range of hotel accommodation facilities. You have hotel/lodging rooms that charge as little as Rs.600-700 per day and the range peaks to even Rs.8,000/- per day (and may be beyond too) in top of the 5 Star hotels. There are a number of lodges near Chennai Central Railway Station. Many of them are located in too-congested and narrow lanes. But then, these lodges do a good business, like their counterparts in other cities, which too are located close to Railway Stations.
T.Nagar, which is known for its textiles and jewellery retail sales shops, is one place where you can find mid-range and top-range hotels. You may not be able to find cheap accommodation here. T.Nagar is a kind of quasi area, meaning a commercial-residential type.
Egmore, which is another Railway Junction, located close to the Chennai Central Railway Junction, has also got its own set of lodging accommodation. There are a few hotel-type of accommodation too here. Egmore is closer to Mount Road (Anna Salai).
Parrys Corner is another area, where you can find a few lodging accommodation, but no hotels. Parrys is closer to the Chennai Beach Railway Station that is located at the tip of the Chennai Harbour.
There are at least 2-3 lodges in many residential/commercial areas like Mylapore, Adyar, Kodambakkam, etc.
The GST Road (Great Southern Trunk Road)and Anna Salai cuts through almost all the busy areas of Chennai. Anna Salai takes over from the GST Road (which is almost the start point for Chennai city) at Guindy intersect and flows through the busy areas of Chennai. You have a good number of hotels and lodges, either on these roads itself or very closeby. Well, the Chennai Airport is also located on GST Road only. You will find a few hotels and lodges close to the Airport itself.
www.chennaionline.com gives you a glimpse of hotel accommodation facilities at Chennai.
If your query is comprehensive, I could have given you more details. I wish you a wonderful stay at Chennai.

Quiet a usefull one.Gives the overall picture of Chennai. I would be more interested in hotel/lodging rooms that charge Rs.600-700 per day as I will have to spend 4 nights there so it will be in my budget. Most important concern is the safety as my wife is coming along. Also, I will prefer something near or on GST road as my venue of work "Royal Meridian Hotel" is there only.
If you have any suggestions, I am also open to staying with some family in their residence as that will give me a close exposure to living and culture of Chennai.
Thanks again.

Well, Le Meredien hotel is about 10 kilometers off Tambaram Railway Station. Pallavaram should be about 6 kilometers off Le Meredien. I think the tariff should be in the range of Rs.800- 1000 per day, even in these areas.
I have no idea about the tariff in lodges near Chennai Central Railway Station. But they should be pretty cheap too and much below the Rs.800 mark.
I am sorry I am not able to help you find an accommodation that would make you stay with a family, as of now.
Cheers!
